this time the tone is.i hate to use the word "perfect", so i'll just say that it was very impressive. OMG! the creamy goodness i'm hearing is very different from the first test. this test uses my mahogany neck thru Ibanez rgt42FM with Duncan Distortion pickups. after a couple more plays, i can't take it.i'm back at my guitar.įirst test involved only my EMG Gilmour loaded strat. LSU is looking pretty sad at halftime, so i go workout. So i took a break from audio and went watch some football. i will know for sure thursday night when i jam with the band. More info to come, but for now.it's a keeper. I get the feeling that VSA has the same type of tone from his monitors, because his presets sound right at home on this speaker. if it is, it won't be hard to dial that frequency down on future presets. it sounds like the highs are more sensitive at a particular frequency that i haven't determined yet. the cool thing about the highs is that it really brings out the percussive tone of a guitar and allows more of a Nuno/Extreme feel.

these speakers sound very similar, but have more highs.a lot more. I mostly use my audio technica headphones to make presets, so my ears are very used to that sound. i will try to make up some presets based around the speaker to see what it really has going for it. better sounding for DJ stuff, but adds more highs to a box that already is very clear sounding. I'm still on the fence about the contour knob though.

it reminds me of the QSC K series speakers in that it has very crisp defined highs and really lets you hear effects well (so you need less of them).

probably the best sub $300 powered speaker i've played yet. I'm still in the testing phase, but.the speaker is pretty good for the money. much improvement over the Harbinger crap box i tried earlier last week. I got the Alto Truesonic 12" speaker in today. I think these speakers are a big bang for the buck! I never tested these speakers with other FRFR so I can't compare them out side of the Altecs but I have to say for the price I'm very very happy and hope to get another one soon to run in stereo. My electric is a Tele with a Little '59 in the bridge. I have a Martin D35 with an LR Baggs iBeam pup running through the 11r that sounds amazing. It has a nice punch and can get pretty loud. This is something to consider if anyone tries these out. The 15" I tested at GC was on the floor and the 12" was on a stand.

Maybe this is common knowledge with powered FRFR but it really made a difference! I'm going to build a base about a foot high with black furniture grade PVC pipe to rest it on.

The manual suggests using it on a stand and after I put it on a moving dolly the nastiness went away. It sounded the worst when I played palm muted chunky chords. One thing I noticed when I tested it out at home is this nasty boingy overtone sound around 100 hz when I had the speaker setting on a cement floor. These beasts are old school and weigh a ton so I've been looking for something more manageable to carry around. I've been wanting to go the FRFR route for a while and have been using a pair of Altec Voice of the Theatre speakers from a friend. Like derker said the 15 was kind of woofy. After trying out the 12" and 15" Alto speakers I decided to go with the 12".
